Behind a beautiful wrought iron entrance gate lies the cemetery "Ter Navolging", the first non-Jewish cemetery in the Netherlands that was built outside the built-up area. Resistance had arisen, especially for hygienic reasons, to the practice of burying the dead in and around churches. That is why A. Perrenot (1726-1784), a Swiss member of the court of stadtholders William IV and William V, who had obtained his doctorate in 1748 with the thesis "On the prohibition to bury in the city and in the churches", decided to build a cemetery in the dunes near Scheveningen. He named the cemetery "Ter Navolging", in the hope that the example would be followed. The first burial took place here on May 11, 1780.
