The church, originally dedicated to John the Baptist, has a single-nave Romanesque ship from the 12th century and a five-sided Gothic choir from the 14th century. The tower, built in 1548 under the direction of Cornelis Claesz, has a height of 72 meters, making it the second tallest church tower in Friesland after the Bonifatius Tower in Leeuwarden. The shaft, consisting of three sections, measures 31 meters, and the tapered spire is 41 meters high. The bell, cast in 1525 by Geert van Wou and Johannes Schonenborch, is notable. The organ from 1760 by Gerard Stevens was rebuilt in 1764 by Albertus Antoni Hinsz. The interior was renovated in 1882. The church was restored in 1960-64, 2000, and 2003. The church is a national monument.
