The Gypsy Monument in Drachten is a hard stone sculpture of a caravan, with a crack in the middle. In this crack are the names of seven victims inscribed. The sculpture stands on a round stone pedestal. The monument is 1 meter 75 high.
From a distance, the sculpture seems to depict two caravans in a procession. Up close, it is just one caravan with a crack in it. This symbolizes the rupture that has occurred in the lives of the gypsies. The round pedestal represents the globe, which symbolizes traveling peoples around the world.
