The canal connects Opeinde with De Leijen and is 1.7 kilometres long. In Opeinde, the canal continues as the Nieuwe Kanaal towards the southern port of Drachten. Via De Leijen, a fairway, it connects to the Lits that leads to Rottevalle and via Oostermeer to the Bergumermeer.
The Frisian name Peinder Kanaal has been the official name since 15 March 2007. The canal is also known as the Opeinder canal in Dutch.
