House in Westervelde

The Huis te Westervelde is a monumental mansion in the village of Westervelde near Norg in the municipality of Noordenveld.
As early as the Middle Ages, there was mention of a building on this site. In 1630, the house is recorded as the residence of the then deputy of Drenthe, Herman Lunsche. In 1646, this house was the most expensive residence in the parish of Norg. The grandson of Herman Lunsche, Warmolt Lunsingh, had the house and its surroundings beautified. He was the steward of Dickninge, deputy of Drenthe, and ettete for the dingspel Noordenveld. After 1742, the house came into the possession of his daughter Elisabeth, who was married to the Groningen lawyer Johannes Tonckens. Through her, in 1755 her son Warmolt Tonckens became the owner of the Huis te Westervelde. From that time on, the house was also referred to as Tonckensborg. Around 1790, his son Joachimus Lunsingh thoroughly renovated the house. He belonged to the wealthiest residents of Drenthe during that period. Several of his descendants, who were also mayors of Norg, used this house as their official residence. In 1964, another renovation of the building took place. The floor added in the 19th century was removed again.
