Werkeren Castle was built around 1365 at a sand height, in a very strategic location between the IJssel and the Zwarte Water. Anyone who wants to enter or leave Mastenbroek can easily be checked from this place.
In 1390 the reclamation was finished and the Mastenbroekerpolder had a tightly mapped out interplay of lines of dikes, canals, weterings and ditches, drainage locks, roads and bridges. The farms are built on mounds, so that the residents keep their feet dry during the regularly recurring floods.
In short, in 25 years, the wild and rugged landscape has been transformed into a completely new and extensive agricultural area with very fertile land, which is mainly used for cattle breeding. This gives the economic life around Zwolle a big boost.
