The Amerongse Berg is a hill in the municipality of Utrechtse Heuvelrug in the Dutch province of Utrecht and is the highest point in the province of Utrecht with a height of 69.2 meters above sea level. The hill is located northeast of Amerongen in the Amerongse Bos, one of the oldest forests on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Most of the forests on the ridge are no older than a century, in the Amerong Forest some Scots pines date from 1770. The forest was created as a hunting ground for the lords of the castle lords of the castle Amerongen located in the Amerongse Bovenpolder.
The hill is part of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug moraine. To the northwest are the Hazenberg, the Flat Mountain and the Zuilensteinse Berg and to the southeast are the Galgenberg and the Elsterberg.
The Utrechtse Heuvelrug has several peaks above 50 meters, but here the moraine reaches its highest point: more than 69 meters above sea level. There is no view of the surroundings because of the vegetation. Beautiful old beech avenues, laid out at the end of the eighteenth century by the lord of Amerongen Castle, lead to the top. The lord of the castle had a wooden watchtower, more than 20 meters high, built on the top. This was destroyed by fire in 1907 and in the thirties a steel tower was erected that served as a fire tower. After the signalling function was taken over by aircraft in the seventies, this tower eventually had to be demolished due to overdue maintenance. Plans to rebuild a watchtower at the top of Amerongse Berg have stalled in recent years.
