The Royal Orphanage in Buren was founded in 1613 by Princess Maria of Nassau, daughter of Prince William of Orange and Anna van Egmond, Countess of Buren. For this purpose it made available goods and funds worth thirty-two thousand guilders.
The entrance gate of the museum reads: Mary of Nassau; Née Princesse of Orange, Countess Dowager of Hohenlohe, founded this orphanage in 1613. Until 1952, the building served as an orphanage for Protestant children from the county of Buren, Leerdam and the barony of Acquoy and IJsselstein. After that, guardian children were cared for until 1971.
Since 1972, the Museum of the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee has been located there.
