Belgian monument

The Belgian monument on the Edese Heide near the Gelderland town of Ede is a memorial stone in memory of the former Belgian refugee camp Vluchtoord Ede that was located here from 1915 to 1918. At the time of the First World War, more than a million Belgians fled across the border to the neutral Netherlands. More than 5300 of these were taken care of in Ede. The camp, consisting of barracks, was an entire village complete with a school, hospital, shop, workshops and a church. There was also its own power plant for lighting and driving machines in the workshops. The camp was largely self-sufficient. There was even its own security service. Refuge Ede consisted of four quarters. The facilities were located in fifteen minutes, the other three quarters were residential locations with the names Leyedorp, Maasdorp and Scheldedorp. The quarters were separated by two main streets.
