The Athenaeum Illustre in Deventer, a so-called illustrious school, was an institution for higher education that existed from 1630 to 1878. After the establishment of a gymnasium and a higher civic school in Deventer, the school, which had long been of limited significance, was dissolved. In 1579 and 1580, the municipal government attempted to establish a 'collegium' named Transisulanorum. Although the approval for this was granted, the plan was not executed, presumably due to strong opposition from the city of Zwolle. This setback was likely the reason why Anna van Twickelo and her son Balthasar Boedeker decided in 1584 to transfer almost their entire fortune to the City of Deventer through a testament with the aim of establishing a university there.
