Situation in September 2925: The fens are dry, or at least thirteen of the sixteen. The rowan is declining, and therefore its nectar, which the wild bees crave, is becoming scarce. In dry areas, the common reed takes over. And when that is dry, the fire danger increases.
The Kalmthout Heath, where the desertification of Flanders begins. When environmental historian Maïka De Keyzer (KU Leuven) read that in the newspaper in 2020, she couldn't believe it. "Desert? In Kalmthout? In the Middle Ages, that was a soaking wet area."
