Nature reserve de Oude Buisse heath.
In the Oude Buisse Heide, turf was once extracted; it was an important fuel at the time. Peat consists of a build-up of dead plant remains in the bog. By cutting out this layer, which has formed over hundreds of years, and drying it, peat is created.
This peat was transported to the ports of Breda on long narrow boats. The boats were pulled forward by horses or manpower. Peat extraction was very important in this area; it provided employment and income from the land.
