Old Warande

The Oude Warande is an 18th-century park located south of the Tilburg-Breda railway line, between Tilburg University station and the Reeshof district. The park was established in 1712 on the orders of Willem VIII of Hesse-Kassel and is one of the few intact star forests in the Netherlands. A star forest is named so because from a central point, a number of avenues, usually six or eight, extend into the corners and outer edges. The Oude Warande has eight star avenues, and along the edges run four avenues that enclose a square of about seventy hectares. The park was designed in a Baroque style, using the designs of landscape architect André le Nôtre as a model. This is reflected in the symmetrical, rectangular avenue pattern radiating from a small central statuesque area. In the 1980s, only the main lines of this configuration were still visible. Subsequently, there followed a renovation that lasted nearly twenty years, which was completed in 2008. The old avenues were restored, diseased trees were removed, the silted pond was dredged, and ‘wild’ paths were eliminated.
