The National Monument The Dutch Maiden is located in Eede, Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, and was placed there in memory of the fact that on March 13, 1945, Queen Wilhelmina set foot on Dutch soil for the first time since her departure to London.
On May 13, 1940, three days after German troops invaded the Netherlands, Queen Wilhelmina took refuge in England aboard the British destroyer 'H.M.S. Hereward'. She would remain in exile here for the rest of the Dutch occupation. After the southern part of the Netherlands was liberated in the summer of 1944, plans were made for the queen to visit the liberated areas. These plans could be realized in March 1945. From the also liberated Belgium, on March 13, the queen crossed the Belgian-Dutch border at Eede. Later, she would describe this event in her autobiography Alone but not Lonely as one of the greatest events of my life.
