This salt marsh area was diked in 1780. The name of this dike (1780) refers to Magdalena de Jonge, wife of Jacob Mersen. He was the biggest owner. The fields were cultivated by neighboring farmers.
In the southeast corner, a fortification was built in 1786; the Magdalena Fortress (1786). After its dismantling, a farm was built there. See photo.
