Castle Stein is nestled between the village of Stein and the Julianakanaal. It is a moated complex consisting of a ruin of an old main castle with an outer bailey, a north wing with an access gate, a west wing with a coach house, and an east wing.
The main castle or "Upper Castle" includes a motte castle on a natural elevation with a substantial marlstone keep from around 1200, called the "White Tower." In the 13th century, a polygonal curtain wall was constructed around an inner courtyard. Only the barrel-vaulted cellars of a large hall with living quarters built against the curtain wall remain. From a 13th-century square gate tower on the north side of the castle, only a few remnants remain. The so-called "Red Tower" and the well tower adjacent to it were built by Jan van Heinsberg and date from around 1450.
