National monument
The 14th-century Erenstein Castle is located in the Anstel Valley and is named after its first resident, knight Adam van Ederen. He chose this strategic location - on the trade route between Cologne and Bruges - to collect tolls at the bridge over the Anstelerbeek. In the castle garden, which you will walk through later on this route, there stands a bust of Gabriël Grupello. This famous Flemish sculptor spent the last years of his life in the castle and died here in 1730.
