Poptaslot/Heringastate

The Poptaslot has stood the test of time well. What was established around 1512 by the Heringa family as a stins can still be admired in the same beauty today. For a century, the house was inhabited by the Heringas, until the estate came into the hands of the noble Van Eysinga family through inheritance. The Frisian stins underwent a modernization in 1631, perfecting it into the form we know today.

Both the sandstone fireplaces and the beautifully decorated cabinet testify to the wealth that the Van Eysinga family brought. In 1687, Dr. Henricus Popta became the new owner of the estate. This marked the first time in its history that the house was sold. The wealthy lawyer from Leeuwarden intended to use it solely as a summer residence. Nevertheless, the unique state in which it still exists can be entirely credited to him.

The legacy of Dr. Popta

Dr. Popta has, exemplary, ruled over his grave. He not only founded a nearby Women’s Almshouse but also ensured, through his inheritance, the preservation of the estate to this day. The distinguished Poptagestoelte in the church is also part of his legacy. As his will solemnly prescribes, the foundation is still managed by the four trustees of the Dr. Henricus Popta almshouse.
