The NEMO Science Museum (opened in 1997) invites visitors to participate in technical experiments. It's very fun to gain more awareness of technology and nature. Architect Renzo Piano designed a unique building for NEMO. He ignored the conventions for a building: vertical walls and horizontal floors, straight windows and doors. The building is located on the south side of the IJ tunnel. Piano created a design that reflected the downward slope of the tunnel in the upward curve of the rounded bow and hull. The distinctive shape is further emphasized by the unique material with which it is clad: oxidized copper. On the back of the building, there is a public terrace.
