Polder Achthoven (118 hectares) is located between Lexmond and Ameide. The nature reserve consists of moist grasslands full of flowers, rugged grasslands, forests and a single pilot whale. The Zuid-Hollands Landschap has excavated many plots in recent years. As a result, special species now grow in the grasslands, such as marsh cartel leaf, broad orchid, reed orchid and flesh-colored orchid. A duck cage is hidden in the elongated strips of forest. Here a kooiker used to catch wild ducks. The beautiful, old pollard willows attract collared redtails. In the forests fly hawks, tree falcons and treecreepers. At dusk you can often see deer in the grasslands. Parts of the nature reserve are open.
In the grasslands of Polder Achthoven, purple herons and snow-white great egrets hunt amphibians and small mammals. Meadow birds such as godwits, redshanks and lapwings also breed there, and since this year also slobe ducks. We fertilize the grasslands in the meadow bird area with old-fashioned straw fertilizer. This creates a lot of soil life and that means: food for the birds. We keep the rest of the grasslands sparse, so that vulnerable plants can develop. We don't mow until the chicks have flown out.
