Goudsbloemgracht

The Goudsbloemstraat used to be the Goudbloemsgracht. But that was filled in. And that has a connection with space shortage and health. When one looks for the cause after the cholera epidemic of 1866, one quickly ends up in the poor and filthy Amsterdam Jordaan, where up to ten times as many people die as in the rest of the city. Not that the situation is much better with the canals, because what foreign visitors always notice is that Amsterdammers are always so diligently scrubbing their sidewalks, but that this cleaning frenzy cannot prevent the canals from smelling. It's no coincidence that the wealthy flee to their country houses in the summer.
