Die Goudsbloemstraat war früher die Goudbloemsgracht. Aber diese wurde zugeschüttet. Und das hat einen Zusammenhang mit Platzmangel und Gesundheit. Wenn man nach der Cholera-Epidemie von 1866 nach den Ursachen sucht, stößt man schnell auf das arme und schmutzige Amsterdamer Jordaan, wo bis zu zehnmal so viele Menschen sterben wie im Rest der Stadt. Nicht dass es mit den Grachten viel besser bestellt ist, denn was ausländischen Besuchern immer auffällt, ist, dass die Amsterdamer ihren Bürgersteig immer so fleißig schrubben, aber diese Putzwut nicht verhindern kann, dass die Grachten stinken. Es ist nicht umsonst, dass die Wohlhabenden im Sommer in ihre Landhäuser fliehen.
