n forestry Exloo alternates closed coniferous and deciduous forest, open heath and drifting sands. Boswachterij Exloo is located on the Drentsche Hondsrug. In the forestry lies dolmen D30. The intriguing structures were built five thousand years ago by the Trechterberker people. They served as a common grave. If you look closely, you will see more traces of the past in the Exloo forest. Just like that, at a crossroads, stands a marker stone near a thick oak tree. In the past, such stones marked the border between the marches of Odoorn, Exloo and Buinen. A bit further is the Glacier Pit, a kind of overgrown crater that was created during the ice age.
Over the years, the forests have grown into deep green forests with all kinds of trees. In the forest on the North-West side of Exloo there is a unique forest section. In 1972 a storm swept over the Netherlands and much of the forest in Exloo was destroyed. The forest has been cleared and has recovered beautifully. One forest section has not been cleaned up and here is a unique piece. The rolling landscape makes the forestry a wonderful area for walking, cycling or horse riding. There are many cycling and walking routes. These can be obtained at the Tourist Information Point (TIP) Borger-Odoorn, located in the Sheep Information Centre in Exloo.
The village is also worth a visit. Old oaks and lindens frame the village edge and in the village there is a sheepfold. In the morning, the shepherd takes the flock of Drenthe heath sheep to the Molenveld.
