The Dome

Description

The dome was originally a sheltered lookout point. During the war years, a 'land guard' was established to spot approaching enemy ships in time, in order to prevent a possible landing. Such a lookout point was also known as a watch house or a Sentinel. As early as 1598, the Committee of the States of Zeeland established a 'land guard'. The dome also served as a lookout point during the First World War. In 2000, the dome was destroyed by fire. In 2001, it was rebuilt on behalf of the Renesse Foundation.
