Het koepeltje is van oorsprong een beschutte uitkijkpost. In oorlogsjaren werd een ‘landwacht’ ingesteld om naderende vijandelijke schepen tijdig op te merken, zodat een eventuele landing voorkomen kon worden. Zo’n uitkijkpost werd ook wel een wachthuis of een Sentinel genoemd. Reeds in 1598 werd door de Gecommitteerde Raden van Zeeland een ‘landwacht’ ingesteld. Ook in de Eerste Wereldoorlog heeft het koepeltje nog dienst gedaan als uitkijkpost. In 2000 werd het koepeltje door brand verwoest. In 2001 werd het in opdracht van de Stichting Renesse herbouwd.
