Here at 'Het werk aan de Daatselaar', two important dikes of the Grebbelinie converge: the Slaperdijk from the south and the Groeperkade from the west. Both dikes were designed to capture water in a 'bowl' and, if necessary, flood the land with the help of a sluice gate when enemies approached. The construction of a fort in 1799 allowed this strategic location to be defended. The water around the fort was supplied by the Lunterse Beek.
It was a large fort with a so-called 'terreplein', where the troops could bivouac.
The Grebbelinie also played an important role during the May days of 1940. However, this did not apply to Fort Daatselaar, which was positioned too far ahead to the east.
In 2007, Staatsbosbeheer began restoring the fort, which was completed in 2013.
