In polder Achterbroek, the Zuid-Hollands Landschap, together with the water board, has already given two large areas of grassland a more natural water level. From the Graafkade they are easy to overlook. Wooden partitions ensure that winter precipitation is retained.
When godwits arrive in the Netherlands in February, they like to stand with their stilt legs in the water. The plasdra plots are ideal for this. The worms are in the moist soil on the border of water and land. Within a few meters, the birds have rest and food available. That's nice coming home after a long journey from Africa or the Iberian Peninsula. It's not just the godwits who benefit from these conditions; Species such as ruff, golden plover and green-legged rider are also regular passers-by during the spring migration.
