Crown domain Het Loo is the largest contiguous estate in the Netherlands and is characterized by a rich cultural history, great biological diversity, and much landscape beauty. The Crown domain covers an area of approximately 12 by 16 kilometers. The total area is about 10,350 ha and consists of 8,400 ha of forest, 1,700 ha of heathland, and 250 ha of agricultural land. The Royal Forestry and the Palace Park together form Crown domain Het Loo. The Royal Forestry consists of vast forests and heathlands. The Palace Park contains valuable cultural historical elements.
In Crown domain Het Loo, a 'nature-following forest management' approach is used, where natural processes are central. Nature dictates how the forest will look, how it provides a habitat for flora and fauna, and which trees can be felled. The manager does not shape the forest to his desires but accepts what arises naturally. The wood harvest is carefully determined and imitates natural mortality, so that it does not have drastic consequences for nature and the landscape.
