The boulder clay hills formed in the penultimate ice age (Saalien) in Gaasterland served as a natural sea defense against the waters of the Zuiderzee and still do so for the IJsselmeer.
In later times, steep walls known as cliffs were formed by the wave erosion of the Zuiderzee.
In Gaasterland, the Oudemirdumer Klif, the Mirnser Klif, and the Roode Klif were formed in this manner.
The original boulder clay wall of the Roode Klif was excavated at the end of the 19th century. What remains is a sloping hillside of about 10 meters high. At the top of the Roode Klif stands a monument in memory of the battle at Warns in 1345, in which Dutch troops suffered a devastating defeat against the Frisians. The stone bears the inscription: leaver dea as slaef (rather dead than a slave).
