You pass here the old route of the railway that connected Amersfoort and Kesteren in the Betuwe. The line was opened in 1886 and was part of the international railway connection between Amsterdam, Nijmegen, and Cologne. Between 1890 and 1920, the line was used intensively for this purpose; afterwards, the connection became less important. World War II brought a definitive end to the connection with Nijmegen, as the Rhine Bridge at Rhenen was heavily damaged twice. A new traffic bridge was built on the old pillars of the bridge. The last freight train from Amersfoort to Rhenen ran here in 1972. The route is still clearly recognizable in the landscape, among other things, by the embankment and the various signal houses.
