Estate Zuylestein dates back to the fourteenth century. In the bishop's feudal register from that time, Jan van Zuylen is mentioned as the owner of a 'fortified house' at this location. In 1536, the house was recognized as a knight's court named Zuylestein. When it came into possession of stadtholder Frederik Hendrik of Orange-Nassau in the seventeenth century, Zuylestein became a hunting lodge and was given gardens in Renaissance style. The castle in its original form no longer exists. On March 24 and 25, 1945, the house was bombed by the Allies. They believed that German officers were stationed in the castle. In the mid-1960s, restoration of the garden walls and outbuildings, such as the gatehouse and the orangery, began. The water features and woodland areas, the Renaissance garden, and the kitchen garden have been beautifully restored in the following years. The estate of Zuylestein has always remained in family ownership. The current owner and manager, Jemima de Brauwere, works energetically on the further restoration and preservation of the estate. The kitchen garden is open to visitors, there is an estate shop, and an option to stay overnight.
