Vikinghof has a unique history: it is an old swimming pool area. The basins, changing rooms, and paved paths have all been cleared. The natural relief can now be seen beautifully again. Between Bunnik and Utrecht, the retaining wall along the Kromme Rijn has been removed or partially sawed away. Weidbeeksjuffers, swamp lilies, and also the kingfisher and the cormorant can now be seen there again. The intention is to create natural banks at many more places along the Kromme Rijn in the coming years.
Medieval estate
Wijk bij Duurstede has a fascinating history and the archaeological wealth is exceptionally great. Research at Vikinghof on the river terrace along the Kromme Rijn has also uncovered an archaeological site, which may be related to remnants of the medieval estate: Huis Riebeeck. Jan van Riebeeck, a merchant in the service of the VOC, founded Cape Town in 1652. It is known that the Van Riebeeck family owned property in Wijk bij Duurstede; perhaps the soil traces found at Vikinghof are remnants of their estate.
