The hamlet is located in the middle of the woods of the Veluwe, on an old road, along which many burial mounds can be found. Niersen has existed for several centuries, it was already mentioned in a document in 1335 as 'Marka niirsen'. However, the location of the burial mounds on the Elburgerweg suggests that the area around Niersen has probably been inhabited for about 6000 years. In the Middle Ages, the inhabitants lived from sheep farming and arable farming. The sheep manure was used as fertilizer.
