This is the smallest neighborhood of the district Rotterdam-North. The neighborhood is bounded by the Schiekade, the Bergweg, the Noordsingel, and the Heer Bokelweg.
Where the Agniesebuurt now lies, there used to be the Oost-Blommersdijk polder. In this area between the Rotte and the Rotterdamse Schie, some houses were already standing in the eighteenth century, but during the period 1850-1940 the entire polder was built up. The Agniesebuurt is named after the centrally located Agniesestraat. The name Agniese is derived from Agniese, the only daughter of Dieric Bokel. She married Simon van Benthem in 1336, and then Gherijt van Herlaer. Through her marriages, the majority of her father's possessions passed to other families.
