Stellendam is a relatively young village; the polder in which it is located was only drained in the 18th century. However, around 1220 near the current location of Stellendam, there was an island called Zomerland.
The name Stellendam comes from "stelle," a raised area constructed above the dike that served as a refuge for a shepherd who grazed his sheep outside the dike.
Stellendam is the home port of an extensive fishing fleet (approximately 50 trawlers).
