The Malieveld is a large grassy field in The Hague with a size of 550 x 200 meters (over 10 hectares). The field is bordered by the Zuid-Hollandlaan (which turns into the Benoordenhoutseweg), the Utrechtsebaan, the Koekamplaan, and the Koningskade. A road called Boorlaan runs through the field, which is not accessible to regular traffic. The area is protected as an urban landscape (Nationally protected view 's-Gravenhage - Malieveld). The Malieveld is managed by Staatsbosbeheer.
The Malieveld serves as a location for demonstrations, military parades (a tradition of about 400 years), fairs, festivals, and events such as Beatstad (the last one in 2010) and the Tong Tong Fair. Since 1999, the Great Christmas Circus The Hague has been held there during the Christmas season, featuring artists from both home and abroad. Circus Herman Renz also set up its tents there annually in October.
The annual City-Pier-City Run, usually held in March, starts and finishes at the Malieveld. Occasionally, larger pop bands perform, such as The Rolling Stones (September 5, 1998, 86,000 visitors) and more recently the British band Coldplay (September 6, 2012, 69,000 visitors) and Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band (June 14, 2016, 67,500 visitors). The largest mass demonstration ever held at the Malieveld counted 550,000 protesters. It took place on October 29, 1983, and was aimed against the deployment of new nuclear weapons in the Netherlands.
