Storm Forest, Forest Service Exloo

In the forests of Exloo, in compartment 165, lies the Storm Forest. The forest is located east of the pingoruin on the Buinerveld. The Storm Forest was formed during the notorious November storm on November 13, 1972.

The forests have been restored and cleaned up except for compartment 165: the Storm Forest. The development of this forest makes it clear that not cleaning up can lead to greater biodiversity. In the compartment, you can see uprooted trees that have continued to grow – a remarkable sight that reminds you of a wilderness! As a nature lover, a visit to this area is highly recommended. In autumn, the Storm Forest is particularly noteworthy due to the many mushrooms.

The storm flattened 2500 hectares of forest and over 15,000 hectares were irreparably damaged. Many forests had to be replanted, but from that point on, this was no longer done in the old way. Now, multiple species were used. In later storms, this proved to help – less damage from stronger storms.
