The Ursuline Convent

Breusterstraat 27, Eijsden: The Ursuline Convent

In 1949, the Ursuline sisters settled here, and a girls' school was built on the site of the current main building in 1855. A year later, a boarding house was added to it. The plain western facade was built with funds from Countess M. de Geloes for the benefit of the lower Maria School. This happened in 1881. The wing was raised in 1906. On the eastern side, the chapel was built in 1892 according to a design by the Aachen architect Goebbels. Architect Jorna became the executive architect. The school from 1855 was replaced in 1899 by the current main building, designed by Joh. Kayser. After the closure of the monastery in 1973, it was converted into a town hall under the direction of P. Satijn from 1982 to 1984.
The building served as the town hall for the municipality of Eijsden until 2010 (the merger with the municipality of Margraten) and then briefly as the temporary town hall of the merged municipality of Eijsden-Margraten until the end of 2013. Since 2014, the Ursuline Convent has been the home of the International Museum of Genealogy and the Africa Museum. There is also a Brasserie and the VVV point for Eijsden.
