Gasthuis 18, Wolfshuis (Bemelen): Castle of the Wolff or House of Nivelles

There is uncertainty about the predecessor of the Beusdalhof in Bemelen. In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries there was talk of a 'castle of the Wolff', after which the hamlet of Wolfhuis is named. However, the archives also mention the Scheyffartshuis, probably named after Scheyffart van den Veels, which later came into the hands of the Van Beusdal family. Another name was Veelshoef or Velsenhoff, as indicated on a map from around 1658. Bemelen was a fiefdom of the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe-Kapittel in Maastricht.

Librecht van Hulsberg had a farm with country house-like features built in the early sixteenth century. He may have rebuilt the castle that was destroyed in 1408 by the people of Luiden or in 1489 by the people of Maastricht. Judging by the existing foundations, the fifteenth-century castle consisted of a square tower with a rectangular house attached to it. On the cadastral map of around 1825, a U-shaped farmhouse is visible with a mansion diagonally against the tip of the west wing. This mansion was demolished in 1859. The farm remained in use and has recently been restored. According to the year anchors, the farm was built in 1775.

The farm now (partly) serves as Bed & Breakfast "Het Wolfshuis"
