Corner Backerboschweg, Kloosterpad (Rijkweg 15), Cadier en Keer: The Mission House
The Mission House was founded in 1891 by the French Father G. Desribes. It was built in an austere late-19th-century style. Unfortunately, a large part of the complex burned down in 1954. At that time, a functionalist monastery wing and a chapel with a free-standing bell tower were built according to plans by A. Swinkels.
The complex has a special processional park from which you have a beautiful view over the Meuse valley. In this park, the founder Desribes, who had Bernadette Soubirous' youngest brother as an apprentice, had a true-to-life Lourdes grotto built in marlstone. It contains a statue of the Virgin Mary from 1892 by J. Raffl. Furthermore, at the edge of a lawn there is a Stations of the Cross of 14 stations in the form of six-sided chapels with battlements.
The Mission House still provides shelter for brothers and sisters who are returning from "the mission" or who are in retreat.
