Huize de Horst was built in 1835. A rentier from Zeist bought an old farm with surrounding land here and had this villa built there. After the estate had changed hands several times, it came into the hands of the Church and World Foundation after the Second World War.
This foundation trained Wika's (workers in church work). In 1953 the Social Academy was born. 'De Horst' became nationally known in the seventies with long hair and beards, dungarees and soup dresses. The academy grew into the symbol of progressive welfare work, as it emerged from the zeitgeist of the turbulent sixties. After a merger in 2005, the programme disappeared from De Horst. Buildings and grounds now accommodate multi-purpose accommodations, which even include a 280-seat theatre.
