Blankeveen: seas of white fluff
Venns arise in basin-shaped depressions where rainwater collects. There is an impermeable layer in the ground, preventing the water from draining away. In the water and along the edges, plants grow that feel at home in the nutrient-poor rainwater, such as sphagnum moss, cranberry, sundew, and cotton grass. Beneath the living plant cover, the decaying remains form a peat layer, and eventually, a pond can become completely overgrown. In this pond, Blankeveen, cotton grass grows so abundantly that the fluffy heads create a swaying sea of white in June.
