The plain of the Leersumse Veld was created by meltwater from the ice sheet in the penultimate ice age. In the course of time, deforestation and overgrazing created a heathland with drifting sand. Remnants of this can still be found in the area on the southeast side of the Leersumse Veld. The nature reserve now includes alternating forests and heathland and three fens, the Leersumse Plassen. The heath is grazed by a herd of Piedmontese cows to prevent grassing and overgrowth of the heath. A pretty avenue and old rhododendron bushes are remnants of a former country estate. The Forestry Commission is the owner of the Leersumse Veld and has set up a pleasant resting point in the Veldschuur with information about the area.
