Liberation Monument Mesch, Grijzegraaf Mesch
On the right side, in front of the Public Primary School next to Auberge 't Koffer, is a war memorial, commemorating the liberation of Mesch on 12 September 1944. Mesch was the first liberated village in the Netherlands. The liberators belonged to the 30th U.S. Infantry Division, nicknamed Old Hickory. Part of this was the 113th Cavalry Squadron, nicknamed Red Horse. On the occasion of fifty years of liberation in 1994, a newly constructed street in Mesch was given the name "Red Horsestraat". The square with lime trees and a maple tree at the end of the Grijzegraaf is bordered on one side by a high slope and on the other by a beautiful mixed hedge, characteristic of this environment. In terms of diversity, these roadsides achieved an 8, but human activities sometimes cause damage (too short mowing of the slope and use of pesticides).
