Europapark, Achterstraat Gronsveld
This park was created in the years 1935-1940 by the Gronsveld industrialist Albert Hayen. The originally English garden was designed by ing. Breeder from The Hague. There are some unique trees in the park. After Albert Hayen's death, the former house and park were sold to the former municipality of Gronsveld. The house served as a town hall and later as a restaurant. In 2014, the house burned down completely. The remains are still clearly visible.
The park, a small arboretum (tree museum), has at least 25 different trees, both native and non-native (exotic). Also various types of shrubs such as hazel and a beautiful hedge of holly. The most striking trees are the old 3-4 meter thick trees of about 90 years old, such as immediately after the gate on the right the small-leaved lime without root storage. Close to the former house are two old trees with a sheet deep on the left with a beautiful inflorescence in February, before the leaves appear on the tree. The one on the right is a maple tree with 3 large bulbs and many small mistletoes, which can usually be seen on poplars. Along the way, you will see the native species such as oak, beech, hornbeam, large-leaved lime with root storage and birch, or the exotics such as tulip tree, Japanese walnut tree (Gingko), plane tree, horse chestnut or the imposing atlas cedar, at the back of the garden. This cedar retains its needles unlike the larch, which loses in winter. These trees are very suitable for birds such as the great spotted woodpecker, nuthatch and treecreeper, all burrowers. The songbirds such as robin, wren and chaffinch find a place in the foliage, but there are also the winter nests of the squirrels high up in the tree, made of a lot of old leaves.
