Villa Oranjestein by Wouter Hamdorff

On our right at number 64 stands the villa 'Oranjestein', later called 'Mariënwyck'. The villa was designed in 1919 and was Hamdorff's first large villa design. Although not truly symmetrical, the layout is such that the country house still has an imposing character. The house has an angled floor plan and a retreating upper floor at some points. This creates several different roof surfaces, allowing the house to blend perfectly with its surroundings. For the first time, a type of window was applied in this house that would become characteristic of Hamdorff's work. The transom and the lower part of the window are separated by a lintel that protrudes outside the frame. This creates a strong horizontal effect. Hamdorff likely adopted this element from architect Kropholler. Hamdorff saw the house and garden as a unity and also designed the garden for this property. Notable is the beautiful firestone wall separating the front. The property is a national monument.
