Windmill De Koning stood at the end of the Winterstraat, which was demolished in 1968-1970, on the southwestern tip of the historic city centre. During the construction of the Walcheren Canal, the southern walls were demolished and the mill was moved to the Veerseweg in 1867. At the place where the mill stood, the canal flows through Walcheren. The current mill on the Veerseweg was built in 1882 after the predecessor burned down. The substructure of this predecessor was provided with the current round superstructure. The windmill remained in operation until 1938. In 1951 the dilapidated mill was dismantled, but in 1956 a restoration followed, after which the mill was put back into operation. In 1995 and 1996 another restoration followed, in which the mill was also straightened. Since 1998, the mill has been in operation again on a voluntary basis.
