People in the river area settled in higher places that were known from experience not to flood or only very rarely: embankments, river ridges and donks (Pleistocene river dunes). When the lower parts of the village were used more intensively, they had to be protected from flooding.
Low summer quays close to the banks are intended to prevent the flooding of meadows and hay meadows behind. Summer quays keep the river in the summer bed at low discharges, aided by groynes. Groynes (short stone dams perpendicular to the summer quay) have been constructed every few 100 metres on both sides of the river in the summer bed. In this way, the meandering (meandering) of the river is prevented and the river is more navigable because the channel remains deeper. At higher discharges, the summer quays flood and high winter dikes have to keep the river in the winter bed to protect the residents from flooding. The areas between the summer quay and the winter dike that are flooded by high water levels are called floodplains.
