Landgoed De Wilmersberg

Description

In 804, Charlemagne donated the Nijenhuss farm, along with five other farms nearby, to the abbey in Werden an der Ruhr to contribute to the costs of training missionaries. In Twente, there was a tradition that areas were named after the families living there or the profession they practiced. So, most likely, a Nijhuis family lived in 't Nije Huss.

In the stamp books from 1440 there was talk of a farm De Wilmersberg. After 1619, this name was no longer used in this way. Since that time, however, a combination of the name Nijenhuis-Wilmersberg appeared. So the field name De Wilmersberg always remained. It is believed that the Nije Huss and De Wilmersberg have merged. After 1689, the Nijenhuss farm was divided into two farms, one of the farms was named De Koppelboer.

At the beginning of the 20th century, there was almost no hilltop in the Oldenzaal - De Lutte area without a country house. The area was extremely popular with textile manufacturers at that time. It is noteworthy that the country estates were built in the east of the industrial city of Oldenzaal. It was conceivable that the westerly wind would carry the smoke from the factory chimneys in an easterly direction and thus cause nuisance. Inquiries to the factory owner families showed that much more emphasis was placed on the pretty location (on a hilltop with a beautiful view of the surroundings) when the country estates were laid out. One of these manufacturing families was the Blijdenstein family.

In 1913, Mr. J.B. Blijdenstein acquired the land there. However, due to the outbreak of the First World War (1914-1918), it was not until 1920 that the construction of his villa, designed by the architect Kuipers, began. From 1923 Villa 't Nije was inhabited by the family. The garden was designed by the Amsterdam garden and landscape architect Copijn. Since 1995, Landguthotel de Wilmersberg has been owned by Agfra Holding B.V. Over the years, luxurious hotel rooms and a wellness center with indoor pool, sauna, Turkish bath and rooms for various beauty treatments have been added. For private or business events, the hotel has been supplemented with additional rooms and halls.
