This was once the main route of the River Rhine and was therefore also the northern border of the Roman Empire. Over the years, the Rhine shifted its course more towards the Lek, the river became narrower and shallower. In 1122 it was decided by the Utrecht bishop Godebald that the Rhine should be dammed at Duurstede. This put an end to an important connecting route between Wijk bij Duurstede and Utrecht. The Kromme Rijn is 26km long, average
2 meters deep and 10 to 15 meters wide.
